In a season marked by determination on the ice and compassion off of it, the student athletes of Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (PMHA) forged a bond with the community that extended far beyond game days. Throughout the 2024–25 season, players from PMHA’s Prep Program volunteered weekly at Prairie View Lodge, creating meaningful connections that enriched lives on both sides of the visit.
The Male U18 Preps visited on Tuesdays, followed by the Male U17 Preps on Wednesdays, and the Female U18 Preps on Thursdays. Over time, these regular visits evolved from scheduled volunteer hours into cherished routines, as student athletes and residents shared stories, laughter, and moments of genuine friendship.
“It’s about building character through connection,” said Carson McConnell, PMHA’s Manager of Hockey Operations. “These experiences teach our players the value of humility, patience, and being present for others—not because it’s expected, but because it’s meaningful.”
Prairie View Lodge staff noted a visible lift in spirits each week. The youthful presence brought a renewed sense of energy, and for many residents, the interactions became a highlight of their routine. At the same time, players were given an opportunity to grow beyond their roles as student athletes, stepping into their community as thoughtful, engaged citizens.
The season culminated with a lively road hockey game during the lodge’s annual Family Day celebration. With music playing, residents cheering, and teammates laughing in the spring sunshine, the event captured the heart of a season-long story—one that reminded everyone of the power of small gestures and shared time.
While the final puck of the season may have dropped, the impact of PMHA’s volunteer program at Prairie View Lodge continues to resonate. The student athletes gained more than community service hours—they gained perspective, gratitude, and connections that will stick with them long after they’ve hung up their skates.
Looking ahead, PMHA is excited to continue volunteering at Prairie View Lodge during the 2025–26 season, building on the meaningful relationships and community spirit that have become a valued part of the academy’s culture. Both organizations are eager to deepen this tradition, proving that leadership and kindness can go hand in hand.
