2025 PMHA Male U17 Prep CSSHL Playoff Recap

Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (2) vs North Shore Warriors (4) U17 Prep Division II Western Championships

The sixty-minute effort put on display Sunday by the North Shore Warriors left very little to be desired. North Shore took a penalty early in the game but used the shorthanded opportunity to take the lead anyways, with Lucas Lekakis (2G) making it 1-0. Casey Silverman tied the game for Pilot Mound, but two second-period goals from Tobin Schaefer and Connor Liu gave North Shore a 3-1 lead through two periods. Adam Zamecnik dragged Pilot Mound back within one early in the third, but Lekakis’ second of the game extended North Shore’s lead to 4-2. The Warriors outshot PMHA in each period, killing each of their four penalties, scoring once shorthanded, and going 50% on the powerplay for a complete 4-2 victory.

Wenatchee Wild Hockey Academy (3) vs Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (6) U17 Prep Division II Western Championships

Pilot Mound Hockey Academy’s opening goal of Tuesday’s game must’ve felt akin to breaking through a dam, with PMHA all over the Wenatchee Wild Hockey Academy from the drop of the puck. Keagan Bradshaw stood tall in the first, stopping each of PMHA’s 14 shots on goal, but he couldn’t stay perfect forever. Just under six minutes into the second period, Collin Friedrich (3G) scored to open PMHA’s account for the day, a goal that would be closely followed by two more just like it. By the time the second period was over, PMHA led 4-1, extending their lead by virtue of two powerplay goals in the back half of the second. Wenatchee managed to make a game out of things with a pair of goals early in the third period, but what followed was more powerplay prowess from PMHA, as Friedrich completed his hat-trick and Casey Silverman (1G, 1A) scored late to seal the 6-3 victory.

Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (4) vs STAR Hockey Academy (2) U17 Prep Division II Western Championships Quarter-Final

STAR Hockey Academy’s offence was amongst the most potent in the Western Championships heading into Wednesday, scoring six goals apiece in wins over the Notre Dame Hounds and ISA, impressively having done the bulk of their damage at five-on-five. PMHA split their first two games, following up a defeat at the hands of the North Shore Warriors with a victory over Wenatchee, but would need to improve defensively to handle the high-flying STAR offence. PMHA goaltender Barrett Hayes stopped every shot he faced in the first half of the hockey game, and eventually, the skaters in front of him returned the favour, with Gavin Noseworthy (1G, 1A) giving PMHA the lead in the second period. Ewen Willers kept rolling, scoring his seventh point of the Western Championships so far to tie the game at one, but PMHA would score again to take the lead into the third period. Luke Adam (1G, 1A) cashed in on the late second-period powerplay to make it 2-1 before PMHA would take the game’s first two-goal lead early in the third. Collin Friedrich’s goal pushed the game out of STAR’s reach, with PMHA eventually winning 4-2, limiting the red-hot STAR offence to two goals on 28 shots in the win.

Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (4/OT) vs St. George’s School (3) U17 Prep Division II Western Championships Semi-Final

Pilot Mound Hockey Academy opened their U17 Prep Division II Western Championships with a loss, making their path to the final an uphill battle from there. Despite that, they’d win twice to secure their spot in the semi-finals, where St. George’s School awaited, with their undefeated record very much intact. Through nearly 57 minutes of their game on Thursday, St. George’s showed why they were the favourites; they outscored, outshot, and out-chanced their PMHA opponents, holding a 3-1 third-period lead. PMHA, however, never stopped their fight, and with under three to play, dragged themselves back within one through Brody Wytinck. The goal brought PMHA within one, and with 74 seconds on the clock, Luke Adam would find the tying goal, with his second of the Western Championships forcing the game into overtime. Nearly the entirety of the ten-minute overtime period had come and gone, and with a shootout looking all but inevitable, PMHA would find a game-winner through Collin Friedrich. The goal came with merely two seconds left in overtime, capping off PMHA’s come-from-behind victory and helping Pilot Mound beyond the semi-finals.

Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (7) vs North Shore Warriors (0) U17 Prep Division II Western Championships Final Game

With a 7-0 dismantling of the North Shore Warriors, Pilot Mound Hockey Academy captured the 2025 CSSHL U17 Prep Division II Western Championship.

This is the second CSSHL Western Championship in program history having previously won the 2020 CSSHL U17 Prep Western Championship.

Pilot Mound (Pilot Mound, MB) came into the Western Championships as the five seed and finished third in Pool A at the conclusion of the Round Robin. They would knock off STAR Hockey Academy (Kent, WA) in the quarter-finals, setting up a game against the number one seed St. George’s School (Vancouver, BC) in the semi’s. They would fall behind 3-1 late in the game but rally back to force overtime where Collin Friedrich scored with 1.6 seconds left to send Pilot Mound to the finals.

North Shore (North Vancouver, BC) came into the Championships as the four seed and finished second in Pool A, beating Pilot Mound in the Round Robin. Victories against BWC Academy (Burnaby, BC) and Notre Dame (Wilcox, SK) in the quarters and semis sent them to the finals.

The finals were controlled from start to finish by Pilot Mound. Adam Zamecnik and Friedrich scored 1:36 apart midway through the first to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

It was more of the same from Pilot Mound in the second; an even strength goal from Luke Adam 24 seconds in, and a power play marker from defenseman Chadrick Schulz late in the period.

Jack Perrier started the third off with a goal 42 seconds in before Casey Silverman and Willem Kirk-Bertens put the game well out of reach late in the game.

Netminder Barrett Hayes (30/30) made 30 saves for a shutout in the finals.
