Carson Carels (1G, 2A) scored 1:52 in, Zane Price (2G) scored 1:20 later and Dwight Sawatzky found the back of the net 1:28 after that as Pilot Mound raced out to a 3-0 lead. Lewis Brown got Notre Dame Red on the board midway through the opening period. Price added his second of the game shortly before Benson Hirst (1G, 1A) scored a power play marker for PMHA to increase the lead to 5-1 heading into the third. Louis Dubray-Regnier (1G, 1A) gave Notre Dame Red early third period life with a power play goal but Brody Wytinck secured the Pilot Mound victory with 10 seconds remaining. Piet Mierau (45/47) made 45 saves and recorded an assist in the win.
St. George’s School (4/SO) vs Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (3) U17 Prep Tier 2
St. George’s worked up a one goal advantage by the end of the first period thanks to a late tally from Victoria Royals prospect Harshaan Kaila. Into the second, Pilot Mound’s Aidan McGinty knotted things up halfway through with a wrist shot from the slot off of a feed from Carson Carels (1G, 2A). However, later in the frame Emil Ahopelto (2G) would put the Saints back in front with a trickler that just got by Kyle Beilman (33/36). Pilot Mound was on full press for the third, throwing everything they could on to Imaree Dhaliwal (36/39). It wouldn’t be until the pulled Beilman where Carels would let go a howitzer from the point to draw things up a three and force an OT. Dhaliwal would make his fair share of saves in the extra frame, even facing Carels on a break with little time remaining on the scoreclock. Eventually a shootout was necessary and a fourth round was needed after Carels kept his academy alive with a quick wrister. Dhaliwal would initially stone Jack Perrier (2A) with the paddle, leaving St. George’s Lucas Benn a chance to seal up the victory. Benn would perfectly place a wrister low blocker to grant the Saints their second win of the playoffs, placing them in a good position to possibly make it out of the round robin.
Rink Hockey Academy Kelowna Red (3) vs Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (4) U17 Prep Tier 2
RHA Kelowna Red got off to the perfect start, jumping to a 2-0 lead after Joshua Johnstone and Porter Rossi scored in the early and dwindling moments of the period. Come the second, Pilot Mound found their footing and exploded for four goals. Rachlan Hay got PMHA on the board first after Benson Hirst snatched a puck out of mid-air at the blueline and fed it to the The Pas, MB native. Carson Carels (1G, 1A) would add the second in glorious fashion after chipping a loose puck around Tim Schoeps. Dwight Sawatzky (2G) would go on to add Pilot Mound’s next two with jam plays in close. Sawatzky’s second would go on to be the GWG after Nate MacPhee brought RHA Kelowna Red within one in the third. Piet Mierau (36/39) would remain solid in goal for the Buffaloes, eventually closing out the contest and helping secure Pilot Mound a respectable 7-points in the round robin.
